How long can a product be referred to as “new”? While it is new to X4, the Instructor Kit with Lathe has been available for a little while now. Building on the Mastercam X3 Instructor Kit, the new product for X4 expands further (as the name suggests) to include a Lathe component. So what all does it include, you might ask. Read on to find out! 
Before we get right into it though, let’s look at who the X4 Instructor Kit with Lathe is for. Most obviously, it is designed to work for those who are running Mastercam X4 software; for those still running X3 with no immediate plans to update, check out the X3 Kit. That being said, this kit does include 3 copies of the new X4 Demo / Home Learning Edition (that allows the user to save their work) as do each of the Training Tutorials your students would purchase.
Moving along, this kit is aimed at any instructor that currently uses or is planning to use any of the Mill Level 1, Mill Level 3 and Lathe Training Tutorials. It provides an extra set of tools to make teaching Mastercam easier than ever!
The Mastercam X4 Instructor Kit with Lathe covers Mill Level 1, Mill Level 3 and Lathe applications. 51 lesson plans covering over 85 hours of 
content are included. Each lesson plan consists of 4 main sections: the lesson objectives, clearly laid out at the top; a teaching strategies section which suggest how to introduce the topics covered; an enhancing phase that provides a topic plan that points to the various resources required (PowerPoints®, text & exercises); and finally, the assignment / quiz section. To the left, estimated time-to-complete figures are given to allow easy re-mixing of the lesson plan contents to fit your given course schedule.
There are a total of 45 PowerPoint® presentations provided to help intro-duce each new topic and serve as a concise, quick reference later on. The presentations can be edited or added to (PowerPoint 2007 recommended) and even viewed on systems without Microsoft Office installed as additional tools are provided on the disc. A set for PowerPoint 2003 is also included.
More than 70 industry-proven Training Exercises in the form of .MCX files provide an intuitive learn-by-example experience; the left-hand side presents the final geometry and the right side provides the constructs for the students to re-create it. In addition, .STL and .SLDPRT files are provided where required.
Completing the Instructor Kit are various forms of performance evaluations. At the end of every chapter, there are short quizzes to recap the topics learned. There are over 30 dimensioned parts throughout the texts that can serve as further testing, assignments or practice exercises. Six hands-on practical tests assess 2D and 3D geometry creation as well as toolpathing proficiencies.

Important Note: This kit is NOT designed to work with the Professional Courseware or the Handbook Series. The latter has its own comparable product called the Handbook Curriculum. (Look for an article on that soon!). The sole purpose of this kit is to enhance the teaching/learning experience of the appropriate Training Tutorials.

After a few requests for Mastercam X4 setup sheets we thought it might be worth shedding light on the functionality offered within Mastercam. For version X3 and older, we offered our own setup sheets to customers with a free 30 use trial. Now with X4 released and onwards we will no longer be offering our HTML setup sheets as the ones created within Mastercam are now nearly as practical.
The new ActiveReport feature in X4 allows for such things as taking various screen captures of your part to be included with the report, ability to add specific comments for each, stock size and visual representation, operation list including cycle time, speeds, feeds and tool info etc.
To use the setup sheets within Mastercam you must first go to Settings > Configuration > Toolpaths and under “Setup sheet program” be sure that “ActiveReport” is selected.
Next, right click on an operation and select “Setup sheet…”
It will take a little while to generate, but in the end the Setup Sheet Viewer will launch with something resembling this sample: ARNet Document.pdf
